Description
The focal point of this image is the historic El Cortez in the north downtown area of San Diego, California. Built between 1926 and 1927, the El Cortez was once the tallest building in San Diego, an icon of the skyline for many many years. This image pays homage to this building in many ways. About a year ago a patron who has admired and purchased my work came into the studio to give me a postcard that she found in her loved ones belongings after they passed away. It was an old postcard of the El Cortez with a letter on the back postmarked November 13, 1947. She wanted me to have it because she thought I could do something with it. This image is a results of the inspiration and spirit of that postcard which reads: "Dear Friends, Having a delightful time. All my family were at the airport to meet me. We are going to tea in this big building in the sky room, it is called; up at the top. My brother is taking us sight seeing today so I'm to get ready..." This photo composite contains parts of that letter, ghosted images of the postage and other layers. I took the image framed by some beautiful golden trees that were across the street from the El Cortez.
